Scott had completed his community service and received his pink socks that he would have to wear at least until the council meeting that evening.
Later that day the noise of a car radio could be heard coming down the streets. The noise was so loud that the sheriff heard the noise before seeing the car. Dave, Dan, Stuart and Phil were out for a country drive enjoying the loud music. They were stopped for excessive noise, taken to the jail and ordered to take off their shoes. Dan took off some nice blue Converse all stars. Dave had a pair of blue soccer slides. Phil had yellow Osiris and Stuart had brown deck shoes.
The four then were walked over to the court house in their stocking feet. Their white socks visible for all to see. They figured that the best thing they could do would be to plead guilty. They heard the charges against them and Dave said, “In most places that would be a fine.” The judge said, “This is not most places. You guys think that you can tear through our town and disturb the good citizens who live here and just pay a fine and be on your way. No! You need to learn respect for others: Two weeks community service.” They were placed in the care of the community service supervisor who took them to the bunkhouse to get their orange socks. Since they liked tearing up the streets, they would spend the day sweeping the streets, their orange socks without shoes bringing attention to themselves. As they were let off the bus at their assignments the supervisor said, “You are much quieter now.”
That night the town council met to discuss Scott’s case. The Law said that everyone who does community service has to leave the town in pink socks. It was brought up that those who leave in pink socks probably get new shoes to wear in their own town. After much discussion it was decided that Scott would have to leave the town on the bus in pink socks and would have to buy a pair of shoes in the next town which he would then be free to wear.
Scott bought some new Nikes in the next town but after two weeks with just socks on his feet, the shoes seemed so unnatural and uncomfortable. Scott came into the diner and noticed Ryan working there. Ryan was being treated unkindly and Scott came to Ryan’s defense. One of the patrons of the diner said, “He’s wearing orange socks.” Scott replied, “And he deserves to wear them for what he did but we don’t have to be so mean to him.” Scott, having worn the orange socks himself, had come compassion for others who wore the orange socks.
At that time Brent, an employee of a prominent firm, who was passing through town attempted to pay for his lunch at the diner with a credit card. Sally told him that they don’t take credit cards because the town does not have the infrastucture for them. He would have to pay cash. He made it clear who he was and who he worked for. Sally replied, “Either pay cash or I call the police.” Brent did not have the cash to pay for his meal.
